    Peter Halley (New York, 1953) si è laureato presso la Yale University, ha condotto il suo dottorato presso l’Università di New Orleans nel 1978, rimanendo in città fino al 1980, per poi tornare a New York, dove ancora risiede e lavora.
    La ricerca artistica di Peter Halley muove nell'ambito dell'astrazione geometrica e nei suoi dipinti forme quadrate e rettangolari, definite dall'artista 'celle' o 'prigioni', si relazionano tra di loro mediante condotti a sezione quadrata, rappresentando la crescente geometrizzazione dello spazio sociale del mondo tecnologico elettronico contemporaneo e invitandoci ad una riflessione sugli effetti della pressione psicologica prodotti sulla vita dell'uomo. La geometria minimalista richiama le schede dei circuiti elettronici e i colori utilizzati, intensi e brillanti — ottenuti grazie all'uso dei colori Day-Glo — rimandano alle ondate di flussi luminosi prodotti dalla società tecnologica. I fluidi vitali che circolano nei condotti e che sfociano nelle celle, sono le vite degli individui che circolano nel sistema tecnologico-sociale, dove le azioni sono chiuse entro certi limiti, già precostituiti dal sistema, dove la libertà apparente è garantita, ma entro certi confini. Analogamente sono i fluidi dei sistemi idraulici che circolando nei condotti dai percorsi predeterminati, chiusi dalle loro superfici, creano una pressione di tipo fisico, equivalente alla pressione psicologica subita dagli individui, costretti nel sistema tecnologico che governa e controlla le azioni degli esseri umani compiute all'interno del sistema. I circuiti di Halley sembrano non lasciare spazio a percorsi alternativi; i condotti che confluiscono nelle celle, formando un circuito chiuso, ci indicano forse che non esiste via di uscita da una costante crescita tecnologica. O forse questa manifestazione ossessiva di astrazioni geometriche, dove è preclusa la forma del cerchio – simbolo di vita ed energia vitale – ci invita a riflettere sulla necessità di un ritorno all'equilibrio simbiotico natura-uomo.
    Halley si inserisce culturalmente nel processo di evoluzione del linguaggio astratto partito da Cézanne, passando per Malevich, Mondrian, Albers e il minimalismo statunitense — tra i quali, primo fra tutti, Stella — dialogando anche con linguaggi differenti, come l'espressionismo astratto.
    Peter Halley ha esposto nelle più’ importanti gallerie e istituzioni museali internazionali tra cui il Museum of Modern Art di New York, il CAPC Musee d’Art Contemporain di Bordeaux, il Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia di Madrid, lo Stedelijk Museum di Amsterdam, il Dallas Museum of Art, il Folkwang Museum di Essen e l’Istituto Butler of American Art.
    Halley ha scritto e pubblicato testi su arte e cultura, affrontando i temi dello strutturalismo, il post-modernismo, la rivoluzione digitale degli anni Ottanta. Nel 2001, ha ricevuto il Frank Jewett Mather Award dal College Art Association negli Stati Uniti per la sua scrittura critica. Ha insegnato alla Columbia University, alla University of California di Los Angeles e alla School of Visual Arts. E' stato direttore del Graduate Studies in pittura e incisione presso la Yale University School of Art (2002-2011).
